A decade back, his paddy fields yielded two crops in a season. But with the adjoining paddy fields converted into a housing project only one crop is possible per season now – a death knell for farming in the Indian state of Goa.
For the umpteen time Joao Santan Rebello cast his vote last month, to elect his representative to the 15th Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian parliament, since Goa got liberated from the Portuguese in 1962. Much has changed over the years with modernization in the tourist-resort state, the small state of India which welcomes some four millions foreign tourists every year. In the race to build mega housing projects to cater to the tourists many a paddy fields have fallen prey.
People like Rebello who hails from coastal village of Benaulim are becoming rarer and rarer to find in Goa , one who continue to cultivate their paddy fields in the face of many obstacles. All his life he has lived on the profits from his paddy fields and buffaloes rearing business - to take care of his family needs and to provide education to his five sons. Giving up on what he has been doing all his life is hard thing and that is what Rebello finds difficult.

However, May to September are not the months to explore the ocean as Goa mostly sees higher tides and stronger winds. This thankfully does keep a lot of tourists away. Benaulim beach had 3 points of entry around the Trinity area. Entry 1: can be accessed from the southern tip. If you stand facing the ocean (which you won't really see - but imagine you are facing it) when at the trinity church, the road on your left will take you there. It is also easier to spot it as the Taj is located around there. There are no shacks, there no human in sight. Making it the most uninhabited spot. But due to the Taj, people do use the beach a lot from time to time. Entry 2: If you drive down directly via the trinity church, you will find the best spot to the beach. There are very few shacks, as a result very few or no tourists. Making it the best spot. Entry 3: If you go via, the Maria Hall, you get a few more shacks, along with Jauncy's, best known for its Goan and Sea food Cuisines. Don't ask for sandwiches and all, they will either take forever or keep getting it wrong. Water sports in Benaulim are not as chaotic as in Colva, though some operators hang around the beach shacks. One of the best is Pele’s Water Sport, which offers parasailing and dolphin-spotting trips, as well as jet skis for hire.
